Hey this isn't Atlin! No, I'm celebrating 2010 in Marrakesh with Parisiens Nelly and Thierry. This summer, they visited Yukon and Atlin, staying at Moore House. They invited me to their elegant home in Medina (the Old City) in Marrakesh for 2 weeks over New Years. Marrakesh is totally exotic! Carpets, silver, lanterns, djelaba, mint tea, and a chance to dust off my high school French. Weather Forecast for Marrakesh.

Guess who's back for the winter! Pine Grosbeaks. Aren't they gorgeous?

(Photo right) Ice
fog occurs when the air temperature is colder than the water
temperature. The warmth causes a mist to rise, and to settle in low
over the lake. We will have ice fog until the lake freezes - probably
in January. All photos taken from Moore House.
...and Atlin used to have a bank too! BMO to pull service out of Atlin. ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
Flying to Whitehorse? Fly Westjet to Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver. Then start your Northern visit with Northerners: connect to Air North, Yukon's Airline to fly to Whitehorse. I do! You can now check your luggage straight through.

The
photo above is from Air North's inflight magazine, YUKON North of
Ordinary. I hope they will forgive me for borrowing it. It accompanied
a message from Joe Sparling, President of Air North, in Volume 3 Issue
3 Fall 2009.
Air
North is indeed Yukon's Airline; based in Whitehorse, it flies to
Northern and Southern destinations. The President's Message is worth
reading: "This airline spends almost $20 million each year in the
Yukon, and these dollars are spread out over more than 200 Yukon
businesses and almost 200 Yukon employees." and "We are extremely
proud of what Air North, Yukon's Airline, has accomplished during the
past thirty-two years and in particular since 2002."
See www.NorthofOrdinary.ca. You'll enjoy coming North with Air North!

Atlin has a high tolerance for eccentricity, but the color-comics oddities of the bush advertised by TV dramadies are little in evidence. Atlin's weirdness is less superficial, and darker. "You don't move to the end of the road at the edge of the wilderness if you're normal."

Taku Adventures organizes active and instructive trips in the Canadian wilderness. Our main goal is to offer participants a pleasant holiday, but we also strive to teach them the skills and knowledge they need for travelling safely and being well prepared in remote areas. Respect for and an insight into nature are key values. Our mission is the support to the conservation of the wilderness.
Bart de Haas is the founder of Taku Adventures. Over the years he has gathered a dedicated team of people who support Taku Adventures and its activities. Guided Glacier Walks
Last summer, I had three visitors from Japan staying at Moore HouseB&B. They took a Guided Glacier Walk with Gernot Dick of Atlin Quest. They left Atlin early in the morning, travelling by jetboat to the south end of the lake at Willison Bay. One toe of the Llewellyn Glacier comes out there. They then walked for about 3 hours to get right up onto the ice and into the ice caves. Gernot gave them crampons to fit over their boots to give them traction on the ice. When they returned to Atlin that night, they were tired but glowing with accomplishment, and thrilled with the beauty and wonders they had seen! Contact Gernot Dick at 250-651-7452 and check out the Atlin Quest website at www.atlinquest.com
PS: Ask Gernot about chartered jetboat tours on Atlin Lake, Atlin River and beyond. You'll love it! I do.
